Character Development: Hope, Aspiration and Courageous Advocacy

Character Development: Hope, Aspiration and Courageous Advocacy

  1. To what extent does the school’s vision and associated values develop aspiration in all pupils, giving them resilience to cope well when things are difficult and the perseverance to overcome barriers to their own learning and to make positive choices?
  2. How do leaders make sure that all pupils have curriculum opportunities to look beyond themselves, ask big questions, think globally about life, and develop an understanding of disadvantage, deprivation, and the exploitation of the natural world?
  3. How well does the school community connect its ethical and charitable activities to the school’s vision and associated values? Do leaders provide opportunities for all pupils to engage in social action and to understand how they can challenge injustice?

Resilience and perseverance

We use Zones of Regulation to discuss our feelings with the children.

Our School Rules recognise the importance of challenging ourselves and aiming high.

We had a visit from the Lily Jo Project during Mental Health Week 2021/22.

Ofsted 2022 - Pupils behave respectfully. They follow staff’s instructions and join in with activities enthusiastically. This is because all staff model a polite, caring manner and pupils respond in kind. The colour-based feelings chart helps children in early years to name emotions. Then, as they move through the school, it ensures that they recognise and respond to their feelings with suitable self-control. Lessons are conducive to learning.

Global issues

We held a World Ocean's Day event where children where encouraged to think about our impact on the world.

We encourage the children to be news reporters in creative homwoerk tasks.

We have discussed the current war in Ukraine. This is also evident in discussions at home when looking through CC booklets.

We considered the global responce to the death of Queen Elizabeth II.

Advocacy in school

Class NIghtingale wrote to the PCC about their sustainability programs after looking at the new eco-mosque in Cambridge during our RE lessons.

World Ocean Day event

We take part in walk to school surveys and run scooter and bike riding workshops. They discuss the health benefits and benifits to our world of reducing car journeys.

We held a coat sale to recycle coats and spoke to the children about where our clothes come from and go to.

Advocacy out of school

Ofsted 2022 - All pupils take part in leadership work. This makes them confident and charitable. For example, one class wrote to the council about the condition of the local bus stop. Now it is adorned with cushions and flowers to make it a pleasant place to wait for a bus. Pupils appreciate these opportunities to serve their local community..

We donated food to the local food bank after our Harvest service and the Courageous Advocates team went and saw how the food bank runs and how it helps people in the community.

Conquering Chrishall Booklets

ofsted 2022 - There is much to celebrate in how leaders and their staff cater for pupils’ wider development. The ‘Conquering Chrishall’ approach widens pupils’ experiences. Pupils enjoy these, feeling incentivised by the chance to achieve a ‘let your light shine bright’ badge for displaying the school’s values. The extra-curricular clubs, including those for choir, football and yoga, allow pupils to develop their talents and interests. Pupils keenly showcase their creativity through the ‘tales and scales’ performance or musical recitals. Staff astutely arranged some events remotely during the pandemic. For instance, they filmed the nativity in the village for pupils and their families to watch online..
