On returning this week after half term we have been very busy learning new alternative GPCs for some sounds we already know.

Year 1 Phonics News Week ending 21st January 2022 (Mrs Cook)

In our phonics sessions this week we have been learning about the following GPcS:

y making a long i sound (fly, reply, why)

ow making a long oa sound (snow, follow, yellow)

g making a j sound (giant, gem, magic)

ph making a ff sound (photo, dolphin, elephant)

Year 1 Phonics News Week Ending 14th January 2022 (Mrs Cook)

In Phonics this week, Year 1 have been learning to Grow the Code (learning that some graphemes can make more than one sound).

y making a long 'ee' sound at the end of words (silly, happy, smelly)

ea making a short 'e' sound (head, bread, thread)

oe and ou making a long 'oa' sound in some words, but that this is quite rare  (toe, goes, shoulder, boulder)

We have also learnt a new grapheme (way of writing a sound) for the phoneme 'w' 

                                       wh  (white, whale, whisper) 

We noticed that this digraph comes at the beginning of words and not the end.

We have also learnt to read and spell the Tricky Words: any, many, again

Year 1 Phonics News Week ending 3rd December (Mrs Cook)

This week has been a revision week of all the sounds and tricky words that we have worked on this half term. 

I simply had to share the following pictures, which show the children working hard to write dictated sentences. The room was literally buzzing with the sounds of each child segmenting the words they wanted to spell in order to complete each sentence! The level of concentration was amazing and the children were clearly proud of their efforts, as was I!

Year 1 Phonics News Week ending 26th November (Mrs Cook)

In Phonics this week the Year 1s have been learning about the following GPCs:

Split digraph e-e (making a long ee sound) these, even, athlete

ew (making an 'oo' and 'yoo' sound) stew, chew, threw, new, few

ie (making an ee sound) field, shield, brownie, bodies

aw (making an or sound) draw, claw, paw, crawl

We have also been practising the reading and spelling of the Tricky Words: house, mouse, water, want

To consolidate our learning of this weeks GPCs and Tricky Words, the children spent a somewhat noisy but very enjoyable session today playing lots of spelling and reading games. There was a fast paced game of splat the tricky word (where we read through our tricky words from the week, laid them out on the table and used fly swatters to 'SPLAT' each word as it was called out). Roll and Read was a popular choice as the children worked in pairs to roll a dice and read a word in the numbered column or row, winning a counter for each word read correctly.

We also enjoyed reading some sentences containing words with the graphemes learnt this week. The children used their blending skills to read, by first looking for any di/trigraphs in the words before sounding them out and then blending the sounds together to hear them in the words. Blending the sounds together quickly and smoothly ensures that the children can hear all the sounds and distinguish what the word is.

It has been another busy week of learning for the Year 1s in Phonics. We have been learning about the following sounds:

Year 1 Phonics News Week ending 12th November (Mrs Cook)

In our Phonics lessons the Year 1s have been learning about the following GPCs:

i making a long igh sound (child, wild, find)

a making a long ai sound (paper, acorn, later)

e making a long ee sound (fever, being, secret)

We have also been practising the reading and spelling of Tricky Words: Mr, Mrs, Ms, ask

Year 1 Phonics News Week Ending 5th November 21 (Mrs Cook)

This week in phonics the Year 1 children have learnt to read and write words with the following new sounds:

(ur) ir - bird

(igh) ie- pie

(oo/yoo) ue - blue/rescue

(yoo) u - unicorn

We have also learnt to read and write the following tricky words:

their, people, oh, your

If you have time you could write the new sounds/ words onto some card and make your own flashcards. 

Ask your child about 'Shuffle Time' I'm sure they will love to demonstrate it for you!

Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised (Mrs Cook)

Please find attached some videos which we hope will help parents and children to feel confident about how to pronounce the sounds we are learning in phonics. It is so important that the children say the sounds correctly and as purely as possible. You will notice that the letter 't' makes a short clear sound and not 'tuh', m not 'muh' and so on.

In phonics the Year 1s have continued to learn the Phase 5 sounds. This week we have been helped with our sounds by Geraldine the Giraffe. She sometimes gets things wrong and can be a little bit naughty but she usually gets there in the end!

This week in Phonics the Year 1s will be looking at some of the Phase 5 sounds.

We will start by looking at the digraph ‘ay’ and to help with this, here is a short video to get us started.

This week the Year 1s have been focussing on blending and segmenting. Blending is the skill we use to help us breakdown the sounds in words in order to read them.

Segmenting is the skill we use to help us breakdown the sounds we can hear in words in order to write them down and spell words.
